Sydney, I could tell that you had been watching as you through your hands up in the air and cheered wildly at my ball bouncing skills. I could tell that you had been watching your mommy and daddy cheer for you.

And now you want to try, you want to try to do what they do… and so you cheer, you laugh, you show love with your kisses and cuddles. And as you do… you begin to change this world just like them.

Almond Joy Cookies

I am not quite sure why I upgraded to using a pillowcase to hold the large amounts of Halloween Candy, because at the end of the night Mom was only going to allow 5 pieces to be kept anyway.  Yes, 5! Total! If you are confused…5 pieces for the rest of the year!

We would dump our candy out, covering the entire kitchen table…and would then pick. Raisins were a no we had plenty of them, goldfish no, granola bars…no. This is what I would have picked:

1. Twix

2. 1 tiny box of Nerds ( which I would have inhaled)

3. The largest candy bar I could find

4. was a toss up

5.  A Mounds Bar…it was a sad night if this trick or treater could not find 1 mounds bar in her bottomless pit of candy.

This lack of sugar in ones life can do one of two things:

1. Like me you grow up and overall dislike candy and overly sweet treats and are quite satisfied with 1 mounds bar per year.

or

2. You are like my teenage sister, who has flipped the food pyramid so that candy and gas station slushies are a primary food group.

(Healthy Parents be ‘ware)

Back to the Mounds bars…

As many of you know, this year I purchased our Halloween Candy just hours before our 1 tricker treater arrived.  Which meant the candy aisle was barren except for a few lone bags of peanut butter snickers. Which then meant that I did not have my annual mounds bar.

So I opted for the next best thing, almond joy cookies.

Almond Joy Cookies ( by The Little Red House)
1 cup of butter
1/2 cup white sugar
1 1/2 cup brown sugar
2 eggs
2 tsp vanilla
3 cups all purpose flour
1 1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
2 1/3 cups chocolate chips
1 cup dried coconut, chopped into smaller pieces (or shredded- which I used)
1 cup chopped almonds, toasted
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350° Cream the butter and sugar. Beat in 1 egg at time. Mix on medium speed until light and fluffy. Add the vanilla.
Combine the flour, soda and salt in another bowl. Slowly add the flour mixture, and mix until just combined, taking care not to over mix.
With a spatula fold in the chocolate, coconut, and almonds.
Drop by spoonful onto parchment lined cookie sheet.
Bake at 350° for 11-13 minutes.

Lovin it’ | November Edition

The leaves are beginning to crunch on the ground and the winds this morning brought a fall chill to my face as I ran. As the sun rose I pulled on my first cable knit and sat down with a warm cup of chai.  My mittens and chunky scarves have been pulled from storage and the summer throws have been replaced with the warmest of fur blankets. These are a few of the many things I love about this season.

And here are some of the things that I am excited about making this month:

Upcoming Desserts:

Churros- For over a year, I have been planning to serve these at a dinner party. Mmmm churros and dipping hot chocolate! Umm let’s make that happen!

Hot Chocolate Chai- the best of both worlds coming together, right? …let’s see if it is genius or not.

Almond Joy Cookies- considering that I went to the store for candy just an hour before my 1 tricker treater arrived…my candy selection was quite limited and I missed out on my favorite, Mounds.  To make up for it, almond joy cookies.

Oh, and then their will be pie:

Tomorrow Night for Dinner:

Every year my husband comments on how he loves all the fixin’s of Thanksgiving, especially stuffing.  So tomorrow night we will be having herb roasted chicken, stuffing, and maybe those twice baked potatoes.

Upcoming Projects:

DIY Rug: I have been debating for weeks whether or not the artist in me can actually make this felted rug.  I’ll keep you posted…by the looks on everyone’s faces, it may just be a disaster. Or in my opinion, it could be a huge cozy success!

Fall Decor:

Wouldn’t those pine cones be lovely with a cream linen bow?

That’s all folks.  Oooo I just love Fall

Nicole - I love this post! :) We should have a craft/baking night sometime. You can teach me how to make almond joy cookies!

Courtney - I’m coming over! Prepare the churros! ;)

Niles 6 months | Part 2

Living so far away from a family I am very close to, makes pictures for me that much more important.  And not only just any old picture, but one that truly captures the little things in their personality that are so dear to my heart.  I want to hear there laugh when I glance over and see their face in my living room…I want to feel their joy or adventurous spirits.  I want to hear this little man’s squeals and giggles…

Somebody was definitely teething.

Happy Halloween

I remember my mom sewing our halloween costumes into late hours of the night each year. She made from scratch and fabric patterns panther and lion costumes, and my favorite…the dinosaur costume- with padded dinosaur mittens and an entire green jumpsuit with stuffed spikes and a long green stuffed T-rex tail that dragged behind. I always walked into school ready for the parade knowing I had the Best Costume EVER.

My husband on the other hand argues that if we had attended the same school, he would have won hands down. He brags about the years when he was a walking baseball card, or an x-ray machine with light up switches and organs, or the year his sister was a little old grandma sitting in her cardboard recliner, and one year a couch potato with the couch and all!

He wore crazy creative cardboard costumes, where as mine (though maybe not as creative) looked like they were broadway sewn. Who would have won?

I can only imagine the long debates we will have over our children’s costumes one day.

Till then here are some of my favorite costume ideas…

That woopie cushion is the best!! Makes me laugh every single time.

Have a fun and safe evening!
