A Masala Chai Memory

Starbucks, Caribou Coffee, Panera, even the best Cleveland local coffee shops can’t match the chai tea I drank in Nepal.  The beautiful land, spices, and brewing women of Nepal have forever ruined my experience of chai here in the states.

So I tried making homemade chai thinking maybe I could get close.  I went to the market to pick up everything I needed.  Ginger, cloves, anise star, cardamom, cinnamon sticks…

I boiled and steeped the tea adding in honey, brown sugar, and vanilla.

It smelled wonderful as I poured the tea into steaming milk.   I gave it a swirl and put the recipe to the test.

Once again… nothing like Nepali tea.

It was good and definitely will not go to waste, but it is still missing the creaminess, spice, and sweetness that I tasted months ago.

I am going to keep trying, I just hope it doesn’t come to me growing cardamom and sugar cane on our back deck and purchasing a goat. Ha…imagine seeing that on a leash walking around the city of Cleveland.
